Cesare-Auguste Detti (1847-191 Cesare-Auguste Detti was born in Spoleto and became one of Italy’s most celebrated historical genre painters. He received his formal training at the L’Academie de Saint-Luc and developed his talents under the guidance of Marsal y Fortuny and Francesco Podesti.
Having built up a considerable reputation in Italy, exhibiting his work in Naples in 1872, followed by Rome in 1876, he received invitations to show his work all over the world. In 1876 Detti moved to Paris, where his talent was recognised and he was invited to exhibit his paintings at the Salon of French Artists. In 1889 he received a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition and a silver medal at the same exhibition in 1900.
Detti painted with a remarkable eye for detail, particularly in his costume pieces which he based on the taste of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and a society focusing on elegance and luxury. Highly detailed brush work and a palette of rich colours achieve a masterful image.
