Edward Robert Hughes was an English painter.
Hughes was born in London into a middle class family.
His uncle was the painter Arthur Hughes.
After the first studies adhered to the concept of Pre-Raphaelite painting and the aestheticism. Hughes also widely used watercolor and gouache, often achieving exceptional effects.
He was a real perfectionist, a true lover of absolute beauty that never tired of pursuing through the search for new techniques and ambitious.
In 1891 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Watercolour Society.
When the elder William Holman Hunt was hit by a severe progressive form of blindness, Hughes became his assistant and helped him to complete some works including The Lady of Shalott, and a larger version of The Light of the world today is in St. Paul's Cathedral.
