Nikolaos Gysis [حéêüëلïٍ أ‎وçٍ] was one of the greatest exponents of the so-called " School of Monaco ", the main greek painting movement of the second half of the nineteenth century. His works have as their main theme everyday life, and often that of the family and children. Son of Ounofrios Gysis, a servant, and his wife Margarita Psalti, he moved with his family in 1850 in Athens where he attended the school of fine arts. Thanks to a scholarship he could continue his studies in Germany at the Academy of Fine Arts in Monaco, where he moved the city to live. In 1872 he returned to Athens where he stayed several years, knowing well that in 1877 became his wife, Artemis Nazos. By this time turned the family home in an art studio. These years also made ​​some trips with his friend Nikephoros Lytras, in Asia Minor and in Paris. In 1882 he returned to live, this time permanently, to Monaco, where in 1886 he obtained a post as a professor in the Academy. He died of leukemia Jan. 4, 1901 in Monaco, where he is buried.
