Oskar Kokoschka 1886-1980 | The Brücke Group
Oskar Kokoschka, Austrian painter, began his painting career in the atmosphere of the Viennese Secession in those years had as its major protagonist Gustav Klimt. And the youth activities of Kokoschka was influenced primarily by direct contact he had with the master of the secession. Then came in contact with the German Expressionist group "Die Brücke" and exhibited some of his works in exhibitions organized by the group "Der Blaue Reiter". He is not never officially joined expressionism, yet his works from those years are some of the most senior historian expressionism. In 1917 he came into contact with the Dada group, and since 1920 his paintings began to break away from Expressionism to pursue an independent research that led him to reinterpret impressionism in a new modern twist. After the war he taught at the Academy of Dresden and began a series of journeys that took him to various parts of the world, including Italy, to whom he was bound by an intense emotional relationship. In 1934, after the Nazis had also tried his art "degenerate art", he moved to Prague and then move to London. Obtained British citizenship in 1953 he settled in Villeneuve on Lake Geneva. He died in 1980 at the age of 94.
